th-200 trans problems on a 350 engine
Hi everybody! I'm writing from Italy..
I have a 1982 T/A with a brand new 350 goodwrench..when I did replace the engine I asked to the mechanic to check the trans too..I told me that I had to replace it and he went for a 200(wich was the original the car had..)..isn't it too weak for that engine?
Anyway,I drove it for about one year and 7000 miles with no problems at all but last september it started to have some problems shifting from second gear to third when the engine is cold..after running for about 15 minutes everithing goes all right..
I asked to others mechanics and they told me that it could be normal..is that true?
Now the car is here in Italy and the guy who took care of the shipment(he is also a mechanic specialised in U.S. cars..)told me that this shifting problem is a sign that the trans is about to blow...What do you think?
Sorry for my bad english!
Thank you to everybody and happy motoring with your 3rd gen!
Andy.

Re: th-200 trans problems on a 350 engine
The 200 was only put behind 305 V8's but it's related to the 2004R overdrive trans of a few years later so I wouldnt thing it would be all that weak. But the 2004R like the 700R4 was revised later in the decade for performance duty so being an early year trans may account for something.
It dosnt sound like it's a problem with the trans not being strong enough, likely the valvebody is just a bit sticky. If you end up having to replace it it's definitely better to step up to a 700R4 or a 2004R, the mileage and performance gains will be well worth it.

Thanks..Yes,it is probably the valve body..I finally drove it for a while two days ago and I had problems even between the first and the second gear...It wasn't shifting unless It went to very high rpm!!! I'm going to work on it and it'll be expensive... :-(
but I think I'll keep that trans because to get a 350 here from U.S. it could be even more expensive....

Hm... Theres bound to be an american car enthusiast community in Italy, have you looked around or gotten involved?
No doubt parts will always be a pain to get and expensive compared to where I'm at but I'm sure deals pop up once in a while over there.
You could do more of the work your self too, I know if I were to drive an Italian car I wouldnt trust anybody local to me to work on it. I did just miss out on a beautiful Masarati last year too so it could happen

i know im responding to this late, but i am having the exact same problem with my 82 Camaro, once the goodwrench 350 was in it worked fine for a while and now it will only shift after 5k rpms. i adjusted tv cable and it helped for a week haha. so what ended up being the problem with yours?

I had to fix the trans..it's a th-200,what do you have?..the valve body was a mess and two clutches were worn badly...
No it seems ok..i'm driving it for almost a year (exept for the winter storage) and it is still shifting fine....
