700R4 Lost 4th Gear
Alright guys. Maybe some of the tranny gurus can chime in here as to whats going on.
Long story short, my trans has a slow leak from the front seal. You have to top it off once every couple of weeks.
This problem started a little over a month ago when I neglected to check the fluid level for awhile. Prior to this, everything worked fine. When I checked the fluid, it was about a quart low. I stuck a funnel in the dipstick hole and topped it off. Got it right on hot with the tranny at about 180F.
After this, it was extremely difficult to get the trans to go into 4th gear. This trans has a corvette governer, so it was no simple matter getting it to go into 4th to begin with. 4th would not kick in until at least 50 - 60MPH. In order to go into 4th, you had to either feather the throttle or lift off it completely, but once in 4th it would stay in fourth. It also didn't take much throttle to get it to kick back down into 3rd, but 4th worked fine. However after that top off, at 60MPH the only way to get it to go into 4th was to lift off the gas completely. You could feel the bump of 4th gear, but as soon as you even barely touched the throttle it would kick back down into third. I did get it to go into 4th a couple times, but it would randomly just pop back into third while cruising.
Now however, 4th gear is completely absent. No bump, no bog no nothing. I've been making sure my fluid is at an appropriate level until I can get the leak fixed. I've tried everything short of taking the car to warp speed. All other gears and shift points work fine. Maybe an air bubble got stuck in the valvebody?

Re: 700R4 Lost 4th Gear
TV cable is adjusted properly.
I have been able to get it to go into 4th now. What I did was put my idle back to where it was before.
When I adjusted the idle I overshot it by a tad and it was idling at about 850rpm. Now I undershot a tad and It's at about 550, but don't wanna be bothered right now with setting it again. But I think this tiny amount of slack it put back into the TV cable allowed the trans to shift into 4th easier.
It's still no walk in the park to get it into 4th. You have to be going at least 55MPH, then you gotta let completely off the throttle and the revs will drop for a few seconds. Once you feel the bump, ease back into the throttle and you'll be cruising at 4th. Not nearly as easy as it was before any of this mess started, but It's there.
