Can the 700r4 take this much power?

I m looking to buy another camaro and i came across a good buy i think but i am unsure about a few things.

Its a 1987 camaro it had the 305 in it but the guy blew the engine and swapped it out for a 5.7 4 main bolt engine with 4barrel 600 cfm putting out about 320 hp. The car has a 700r4 tranny and waht im wondering is if the tranny and everything else will be able to handle almost a double in hp?

Unless that tranny is upgraded then no way. I have gone through 2 trannies with a stock 350 with 3 inch exhaust... That tranny is either slippin real bad or 3-4 pack is gone.

It all depends on how you drive it, and what you do to it to improve its longetivity.

Well i drive pretty fast. I dont drive like a crazy person but i do like to put the pedel to the floor when at a red light til i get to the speed limit.

What can i do to improve it that would cost me that much and would be a fairly easy job if there is anything?

Corvette servo, shift kit, oil cooler are the simplest and less expensive upgrades that will make a difference.

You could later rebuild it with a trans kit, 9-clutch 2-3 gear kit or z-pack, high intensity band and 13 vane pump.

It's not the power, it's the torque. I could build a 250 hp engine that would rip the transmission apart if I ever stamped on it. A mildly tweaked 350 in good running order can throw down 400 lb-ft.

I have been very pleased with the service from www.700r4l60e.com ; contact them (Dana) to tap into a wealth of info on the 700R4 transmission.

Well, it's not that hard in the sense that you do not have to get the transmission down. The servo could be difficult to install with the transmission in place but it can be done with some creative thinking. If you have no experience at all with transmissions then you should let somebody else do it for you. If it's a friend, then it's better because you can help and learn how to do it yourself. It's not hard at all to just change those parts so, if the labor cost seems too high, go to another person.
