Ford 9 or 12 bolt?
Hi im Gary, im looking to put a 383 crate motor in my 86 trans am 450 hp and 440 tq. I know the ford 9 is becoming very popular due to the fact they are almost bullet proof, and a couple of my buddies at the track have 12 bolts and both ive heard are great rears. I wanna know which one is the easiest to install/bolt up and i wanna run street and strip so which rear will best fit my needs and be lower in price?
Re: Ford 9 or 12 bolt?
I usually recommend the 12 bolt over the 9 inch. If you are asking about a Moser rear end then the 12 bolt is lighter, takes less power to turn and is cheaper. It's also a bolt in for the 3rd gen. You can get the 9 inch as a housing and axle package and get a junk yard chunk and put in it. This will be cheap, but not as strong as the 12 bolt or the Moser 9 inch chunk. This is also a bolt in. You might have to modify the drive shaft in either case, and your brakes might not work with either one of these. If you have the 4 bolt backing plates on your brakes then they will bolt onto the 12 bolt but will require modifications to fit the 9 inch.

Each diff has it's positives and negatives. One is never better than the other. It just comes down to a personal preference.
