Backlash and contact pattern...

Hi guys. Please take a look to this picture with my contact pattern. I think, it´s really nice. I bought a ring/pinion-kit from richmond gears. They said the minimum backlash should be 0.010". My service manual says between 0.004" and 0.006". At the moment, the backlash is 0.008". What do you think about that ? What should i do ?

Looks ok.
92 pontiac GM service manual: Backlash says between, 0.13mm and 0.23mm (0.005 inc and 0.009 inc) for all new gears.

I just took another look at the pic, I have them a little more centered if possible.

I also thighten the E break a little, by checking the contact pattern.

Here is the pic

Re: Backlash and contact pattern...

I changed the pinion shims 12 times to get this contact pattern. Every time, i adjust the backlash, too. Finally, i used the stock shims on the right side and on the left side from the carrier to get the right backlash and this contact pattern.

Today, i´ve seen, the service manual says, i should´nt use the stock carrier shims ! Why ?? I don´t understand ?? The shims looks great ! Will i´ve got any problems with these stock shims ????

Thank you !

Re: Backlash and contact pattern...

As long as the stock shims are in good shape and the bearing preload is right then they will work fine.
