700r4 Transmission Question

I thought I'd ask this here. My 89 Formula is about to drive me crazy. Brief history. Bought the car 28 months ago. 144k miles. Car had supposedly just had the transmission rebuilt. I hadn' had the car for 3 months before the transmission went bad. I then had a reputable shop rebuild the transmission. That trans didn't last a month(150 miles) before it went bad and I took it back to have it redone under warranty. After a year or so and 1k miles it went bad again. Always something dfferent. No reverse onetime. No 3rd or 4th gears another time. One time there was no drive at all only reverse.
After the last foul up I purchased another transmission that had been rebuilt by a reputable seller on ebay that had been vouched for in a thread on here. I haven't had the transmission in the car for three months and I am almost 100% sure the thing has gone out again. Reverse is extremely slow and I lost all power in drive today.
What in the world could be causing the car to burn up transmissions like this? The engine is stock as far as I know. No headers or other buildups except for a new exhaust and I recently removed the AC.
Any help would be appreciated because this last one is still under warranty but I don't want to pay a shop to install it only for it to die again in 5 months.
Thanks

Re: 700r4 Transmission Question

Are you having the shops do the install as well or are you doing that part yourself?

Shops have done all of the installs. I don't have a lift to get the car up enough to do it myself nor do I have the know how. I know the kick down cable or whatever is very important but wouldn't one of the shops realize the cable was bad? I know they are also a pain to correctly adjust but a transmission shop that works on tansmissions all the time should have itdown pat.
FRUSTRATED!

Re: 700r4 Transmission Question

700r's are horrible transmissions but they shouldnt be going this fast. do you drive hard? are they replacing the filter and torque converter each time? Maybe there are metal pieces in the tourqe converter or the radiator transmission cooler and lines that keep getting recycled into the tranny everytime its rebuilt

Re: 700r4 Transmission Question

My lead foot went away sometime after our first child was born. I'll shove it down every once in a while but not doing anything crazy.
New converter every time and I know for a fact they flushed the lines during a least two of the installs.

Re: 700r4 Transmission Question

Had the car towed to the installation shop yesterday. Just heard back the transmission is DOA. Cooler lines were not restricted. New fluid and filter put in on each install. Is the car just screwed somehow?

Re: 700r4 Transmission Question

My 700r4 was working pretty good when I bought my car about 3 months ago. However, I did have teeth missing on my flex plate and the starter would gring no matter how I shimmed it. Well I put it a new starter and it would grind also. I decided to bring the car to my local Aamco to get the flex plate changed, since dropping trannys for these guys is an everyday occurrence and with me, not so much. Turns out the previous owner put the wrong starter in, which I matched when getting the new starter. My engine is not stock so it is hard to identify which parts I need for it. I had Aamco do a seal service of the tranny while it was out. When I got the car back, it shifted slower and bucked when I let off the gas at certain speeds. I then researched the TV cable on this forum and adjusted it myself. It involved modifying the bracket at the intake manifold. My point is that these guys work with the stuff everyday but I still needed to adjust the cable myself. It is like a whole different car now, reminiscent of the old detroit muscle cars in both sound and performance. I couldn't believe the difference that cable tweaking did. If I were you, I would adjust the cable myself.

Re: 700r4 Transmission Question

I went by the shop that did the install to find out more info. At least fom what they said this breakdown is different from the others. They said the converter broke apart.
