If torque converter is bad, is the transmission bad too?

If torque converter is bad, is the transmission bad too?

So I've been dealing with this for a while but I''ll give a quick symptom breakdown:
  • Bought Rebuilt (supposedly high performance) Transmission to replace burnt up one
  • Never worked right from day 1
  • Drove it fine for about 10 miles, parked it for a few hours.
  • Drove it again around the block and it went to hell. The car started shifting funny--really mushy and elongated shifts and a loss of power. A few feet later I lost all gears. It's like it's stuck in neutral. Probably never got the car over 45 the whole time.
  • Parked it overnight and prayed...
  • Started it up next morning and BOOYA! All gears back. Drove it around the corner and it went to hell again. No Gears.
Bottom Line:
  • After sitting, the car will move and I will have all gears but its like I have very little power.
  • As soon as the car warms up (5 minutes or less) I loose all gears.
At first, I figured I had a lemon transmission. However, the fluid is clean and smells normal. Purchased a new TV cable, no change in results. Is it possible that this is a torque converter problem? I got the converter from the guy who sold me the transmission. It was rebuilt, not new. If it is a torque converter problem, can I still save my transmission or is it likely toast as well?

First thing is to check line pressure in all gears. make sure you have enough fuild just in case. I'd drop the pan too check for metal.

here is a stupid question....but is the TV cable adjusted right? If it isn't,it would cause low line pressure, causing mushy shifts and the 'neutral' feeling. Also, the convertor could be the problem. But the clutches/band are probably already burnt up , but still may work. Maybe the tranny was junk from begining and wasn't working or was not rebuilt right from the get go. I would take it back and get your money back from him.
