700R4 Wont Go Into Park
Problems been solved: Worn out shift cable.
Car is a 92Z with a 700R4, and we physically cant get the gear selector to go into Park. There's allot of resistance when trying to go into Park. Also the car will not start in Neutral. Any help or ideas are welcome. Problem came out of no where, as the car ran fine before this.
UPDATES:
-Removed the shift plate and the cables to the gear selector look fine
-Transmission has enough fluid
UPDATE:
-We manually put the car in Park and Neutral and the car started, so its probably the shift cable???

I think you have a cable problem.Check to see if it starts in any of the positions P R N D321, your park may be reverse, and reverse may be netural, and so on. Should be able to adjust it out, unless it is broken, can you get the key's out of the car? Take shifter plate off and inspect pin that holds cable to shifter.

Re: 700R4 Wont Go Into Park
Got back about an hour ago from advanced auto parts with the new shift cable's. Nearest store that had it in stock was about 45mins away. We ended up buying two cables because of how cheaply made these things are. And its a good thing too, because the first one broke within minutes of installing
. Other than that the installation went fairly smooth and the cars up and running again.
Tips to future searchers:
-I recommend buying two shift cables just in case.
-Save the stock grommet, because the one that comes with the new cable sucks, and doesn't fit at all. (Just carefully cut a slit in the grommet to attach to the new cable)
-Care full around those plastic tabs, because they break very easily.

Yikes - old thread revived ....
For your starting issue, probably the neutral safety switch - it attached to the pass side of the shifter in the center console - two screws hold it in - it's adjustable to a degree.
I highly recommend GM dealer cables - went through 2 of the Autozone/Advance crap in a week, and finally bit the bullet and paid the stealership, but 3+ years now no issues, sometimes you do really get what you pay for.

You wouldn't happen to have a part number would ya? I tried searching for a gm one back then and came up with nothing.
