need some info

here is the story, i bought a project car (85 firebird) with no engine or trans, but came with trans crossmember and driveshaft
my question comes in where i dug the crossmember out of the hatch and it is definately custom, made so that there is a torque arm mount on it and put there very solidly, and the driveshaft seems thinner than what i remember mine being on my 89 camaro, so i am wondering if this is most likely setup for a th400/350 setup also i have not found a tv(kickdown) cable in the car
the car is an ex-v6 and someone at somepoint changed to a carbed v8
or did someone just possibly throw a 700r4 with a tailshaft that doesn't have a torque arm mount on it
i can get driveshaft measurements, pics, or any other measurements someone might need either tomorrow or thursday if needed

what ever information i could get on this would be great, because i have not made my mind up about what tranny will be going in the car yet, at some point i want a moderatly powered engine in it, prob. between 300 and 400

I did something like that to my old 84 if you do a shift kit and 300 to 400 HP be careful. I used 1/4" angle iron it snaped and tore a hole in the floor board and almost cut the break lines

Re: need some info

how does a crossmember take that much tension that it could snap angle iron, and to be clear i am not doubting you, i am just curious

Re: need some info

when the trans shifted it used to break the tires loose in all gears, dont think that helped the cause too much. I think that was most of the problem repeated shock though the angle iron lasted about 3 months on the car before it broke. I drove that car pretty hard at the time.

Re: need some info

it wasnt the weld that broke the angle iron broke just past the trans crossmember about an inch from the end of the weld
