How do i get more gear out of my truck??

I have an 84 Chevy Scottsdale pick up truck that ive been rebuilding. It has a 3 speed manual trans in it. This truck is NOT meant for the highway. If i get over 55mph im turning some serious rpm's. What can i do to change that? Is it as simple as swapping out the ring and pinion? Thanks for any help

Well it just depends on what ya got now. Ive got a 76 short box, 3 speed manual trans and 373's in it. Highway isnt to bad only 3k at 75 mph. Your trans should have a 1:00 final ratio so they only option your would have is an overdrive trans or a different rear end ratio. Most trucks of the smog eara were 3.08 rear axle trucks so if you wanted to step down you can usually pickup a whole axle for $200 no need to mess with a gear swap but I suggest seeing what you have in the truck now before you make any decision.

Since TGO is dedicated to 82-92 F-bodies, you might consider another site, one which would be more helpful to truck owners.
