4l60e guts?
I am sure this has been asked before, but I would like current information.
I have an 83 700r4 trans, and a 97 4l60e trans that I would like to combine to make a better budget trans to swap into my 82 t/a my ?'s are:
what guts will work what won't will I get any inprovement with later parts?
also shuld I get a late rebuild kit, or early kit?
torque converter? 83 is 27 spline, 97 is 30 (I think) if I have to get a new converter, what stall speed would be good for a stock crossfire? the only mod is that I am running an 84 corvette ecm.
shift kit? I think I will be using a transgo stage 2/3 kit, good or bad?
thank you

Re: 4l60e guts?
A 4L60E is electronically controlled by the vehicles PCM. Hence the 'E'. It will not work in your car without that PCM. IIRC, 97 vehicles used a single computer to control both the engine and transmission so you wouldn't even be able to swap in the computer to control the trans. You're best bet would be to rebuild the 700r4 you have. It can be built just as strong as the 4L60E can since they are basically the same transmission.

What I am wondering about is using the insides, I don't want to deal with computer and programing, just wanting to use the later geartrain and mabe pump, will it work?

Re: 4l60e guts?
AFAIK pretty much all the internals should swap over. The pump should be no problem, same with the gears and clutch packs. The only thing that wouldn't are the valve body and shift solenoids. Possibly the input and output shafts depending on length and spline count. I'm still not sure why you want to do this? Unless the 4L60E has already been upgraded internally, there really isn't much difference in power capabilities and/or gear ratios.

Re: 4l60e guts?
that is part of what I am asking,is there any reason to do it, I know that gm made many inprovements between 83 and 87 on the 700r4 were any of these on the gear train I have the two trans around, the 4l60 is from a 97 t/a are the internals any stronger or better? or shuld I just scrap/sell the 4l60 the 3/4 clutch went out (i belive only had 1st and 2nd) and my brother had me install a t5 in its place so I kept the 4l60. I really don't need a bunch of trans around. All I want is a strong overdrive to swap into an 82 with a 200c.

Re: 4l60e guts?
Stick with what you have. If your going to upgrade your 700 then look in to getting one in 89-91 year range and do your upgrades to that trany. The 89-91 Trans have better pumps and internal to start with. Good luck.

Re: 4l60e guts?
If you're looking to build/rebuild a tranny, rebuild the 4L60E and sell it. The money you get from selling it should more than pay for the rebuild and upgrades on the 700r4 you have. This will give you the strongest transmission in the end because you can put better components into that than either transmission would have come with from GM.
You'll want to double check me on this but I believe you will need a new driveshaft as well. I think the 82 driveshafts were a different length than the later years.
