700r4 issue

I recently traded for an 86 irocz. Fromer owner told me that he burnt 3rd and OD out of tranny but brought another to replace it. Well after the swap the tranny wouldnt shift out of park. The shifter itself will go into any gear but the tranny acts like its not shifting at all. I've heard that getting the cables right on a factory TPI car was hard and I've put a gallon and 3 quarts of ATF and still no shifting. I'm new to transmissions so I have no idea what it could be. Everythings is hooked up like it was. Is my 700r4 trash or did I miss something? thanx

Even with a misadjusted TV cable, you should be able to shift into any gear. I would suggest getting a trans pressure gauge and seeing what the trans is doing. You may have to pull it anyway but this will tell you for sure. Do an internet search for what pressures coincide with each gear.

Re: 700r4 issue

You could verify with the car off and the emergency brake on that the shifter does move and the lever on the transmission (driverside) moves along with shifter. If the cable is loose or not connectted that's probably the issue. Just make sure when checking you have the wheels blocked so they don't roll and the brake is on. You don't want the car moving when you put it in neutral and are looking underneath it. If the shifter moves but the cable doesn't that means it either came loose (e-clip on the shifter) or it has a broken cable.

Re: 700r4 issue

As for the cable it all appears to be hooked up right. It moves when the shifter shifts.

Re: 700r4 issue

If the pump is bad that would explain the low pressures and it not shifting. You could call Pro-Built Automatics. Dana is very knowledgeable and friendly with questions over the phone. He also sells replacement parts/rebuild kits/full transmissions. He's always been very friendly to me when I've had questions, because he knows he might have a potential customer.
