Is it the original transmission? If so, it finally failed and you need it rebuilt. If its been rebuilt before, it failed again and you need it rebuilt.

You're losing the band that holds 2nd and OD. I've had this happen. I kept driving it for another year. Progressively more throttle through first gear, up past 4500 rpm, then lift, it goes to third, then ease back into the gas so it won't try to kick down into second.

im going to have it rebuild next week and need to know if putting a shift kit in it and or a lock up converter would be a good idea. it's gonna be a daily driver/toy.

keep the lockup feature. It helps mileage, noise and engine life, but doesn't affect performance enough to measure. Do the shift kit, most such kits have at least 2 stages. Stage 1 is usually called RV, stage 2 is usually race or semi-race. Stage 1 generally is best for long transmission life, and generally won't bark the tires when making the full-throttle upshift into second. It feels like a performance trans you can live with all day every day. Stage 2 is for guys in their 20s.
