clutch grinding and vibrating
clutch grinding and vibrating
i was out ripping my favorite section of backroad today and about midway through noticed when i depressed the clutch pedal it vibrated strongly, i pulled over and noticed that when the clutch pedal is all the way down it makes a grinding noise. it drives and holds fine in gear and the pedal doestn vibrate and there is no grinding noise till the the clutch is all the way down. car is a 91 rs with a lt1/t56 swap. and ideas? i was shifting pretty hard so maybe a broken mount or something? and help would be great thanks
Re: clutch grinding and vibrating
car also tries to grind and wonlt start because with the clutch all the way in it grinds and the starter cant turn it over. i got it to start by taking the switch off the clutch pedal and pulling it forward while cranking it so i wasnt actually pushing in the clutch. anybody have any idea whats wrong here. its like when the clutch is pushed all the way down its interfering with the flywheel or something?
Re: clutch grinding and vibrating
it was still driveable at first as long as the clutch was not pushed all the way down but now the point where it grinds has moved up, and its not possible to get the car into gear smoothly without grinding anymore. any ideas?

Re: clutch grinding and vibrating
Sounds like the lips of the TOB have bent back and causing the vibration and grinding. From your symptoms it's not something that will fix itself or be a quick fix externally. Plan on dropping the transmission and doing some diag.

The noise will stop when the TOB grinds it way through the clutch fingers and thne it won't work anymore.

Re: clutch grinding and vibrating
get a good federal mogul TOB, lots of the aftermarket ones that comes in kits are flimsy compared to stock.
Re: clutch grinding and vibrating
good to know about the flimsy bearings, i was thinking if once i drop the trans the clutch dosent seem to be in good shape i might just order a clutch kit. what are some good options on a budget? motor is a lt1 with ported stock heads cc503 cam 1.6rrs and bolt ons. i was thinking about maybe this kit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ZZZ-HP70043-1/ if i got it should i not use the throwout bearing that come with it?

Re: clutch grinding and vibrating
look at it first, my stock TOB the lips were a good 1/4in thick, the one I got in a kit were like sheet metal, and did the same, ended up grinding through the clutch fingers. When I took it back to show them I got a new kit free and they gave me a FM TOB off the shelf to use instead, no problems since.
