Swapping tailshaft housing on a T56, whats involved?
A few years ago I bought a T56 that had had weld repairs to the tailshaft housing. Well it still has a small leak at the flange and was pissing me off. Well last week I got a good deal on a brand new TS housing off ebay.
How much is involved in popping the old one off and installing the new one? I'm assuming there are some clearances I'll have to check? Is the bearing in the tail housing attached to the shaft or the housing? Any thing else?

The bearing is attached to the shaft. The shim is behind the race in the tailshaft. You would actually have to pull the trans out to check the clearance.

Not a big deal. I'll be pulling the engine anyway. Figured I'd have to pull the tranny to swap this.

To just swap it you would only have to remove the trans crossmember, the shifter, and the driveshaft. Its to check the clearance that you have to pull it. You will need a long piece of threaded rod that is 12x1.50 (I think this is the size). When you pull the trans you will see a pipe plug. Take this out and you can thread the rod into the 5/6 counter shaft and check for play. You will need some sort of dial indicator.
