Mini spool with 28 spline?
So if i upgraded to these 28 spline axles ( http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SAG-EV10-4/ ) and ARP bolts, do you think it would be ok to run a mini spool? Would i have to buy a whole new carrier, or just the mini spool? It is driven on the street, with the occasional trip to the track. I have heard about how it will drive with a mini spool, and i dont really care, i just want to know that nothing is gonna break

Re: Mini spool with 28 spline?
If I were you and just wanted traction to both wheels I would just get a spider gear replacement locker from Powertracks bcause the price for the axles and a mini spool would be about the same for the locker and since you don't see the track that often it would be a better buy for the money and better traction in all driving conditions . Just my $.02 . If you still want those axles and a mini spool that is fine but be careful when cornering . Have fun and be safe .

Mini spools are never recommended for street or dragstrip use. They are not very strong. Mini spools are designed for dirt track racing or off road use.

Re: Mini spool with 28 spline?
I've done the "Lincoln Locker" ( welding the stock spiders, using a Lincoln brand welder ) with 26 spline axles and a strong 350. It was fine as long as I was running the 235/60R15 BFG Radial T/A tires, I ran it that way for months. But I killed it within 3 minutes of swapping on same-size M/T drag radials. Fortunately, within that time I ran a 10.21 at the quarter mile dragstrip. And it wasn't the welds that failed, nor the axles. It was the 7.625" Richmond ring gear.
The conversion style locker does cost 4 times as much, but is worth it.

Yea i can either keep my 26 splines and get a powertrax locker, or i can go 28 spline with a mini spool. I dont really have enough to get 28s and a powertrax. How much stronger are 28s than 26s anyways?

Your LO3 engine will never break a 26 spline axle, and sure doesn't need a mini-spool. I'd choose the PowerTrax.

But thats the thing, within the next year i plan to do a 350 swap. Should make about 350 hp. So how much power can a 26 spline handle? I dont want to buy a powertrax for a 26 spline, only to have to upgrade to a 28 later

Re: Mini spool with 28 spline?
They're technically the same. Both gear sets will fit on the same carrier (posi.) It doesn't matter what you choose to use for an engine. If you plan on pushing the limits of the driveline, upgrade to aftermarket 28 spline axles. The ring and pinion will still be the weakest part of the diff. To put 28 spline axles in your diff, you'll need more than a 28 spline mini spool. The axles themselves won't fit through the hole in the side of the carrier. You'll need a 28 spline carrier.
If you break anything in the diff from abuse, your only other option will be to upgrade to something better such as a 9", 12 bolt or Dana 60. By the time you've beefed up that tiny 10 bolt, you could probably buy a 9" housing package.

as long as you are running street tires you should be fine w/26 spline powertrax or auburn unit but
if you plan on using sticky tires just kiss that camaro's *** goodbye now

Re: Mini spool with 28 spline?
I ran a mini spool in my 89 TA for a little while . My motor made 475 at the flywheel and it didn't break the mini spool. But I was careful off the line when I ran my slicks.
