Help

Alright so i have an 84 camaro z28 that i converted to a 350 and put a t5 borg warner world class transmission to back it up. stock read and drive axle but now it seems there is a clapping noise coming from either the rear or the trans. Clapping meaning like two pieces of metal slapping against one another every other revolution the drivetrain makes. Now the car will not do it in first and will only do it when the speed is higher up in second. Third, fourth, and fifth it will do it constantly. The car will only make the noise when it is under load if i let off of the gas the noise goes away. Does anyone on here ever had a similar problem and or can point me in the right direction on what the problem might be. Ive put the car up on jacks and have even gone around driving it with my head out the window trying to pin point where its coming from. thanks

Re: Help

could be a bunch of things. are you sure its not an exhaust leak?

the clutch could be bad, the trans could have issues, the u joints on teh driveshaft could be bad, the axle could be shot. Could be something hitting the exhaust, maybe even an exhaust sheild

any chance of making a little vid of the noise?

i see you are just up the road from me. Im in Ringoes

Re: Help

ah ringoes yeah im located in branchburg... right down the road from solberg airport. i thought at first it might have been the exhaust but it cannot be that its much too loud. its hard to pin point the noise it sounds like it might be coming from the rear. granted it is the stock driveshaft and read but the all seem locked in place and there doesnt appear to be much play

Re: Help

well, a slapping noise is made from a rotating part.

could even be something stuck in the brakes.

try jacking up the back of the car, put the car in neutral, and move the tires around, maybe you can pin point the noise. If not, visually check the brakes and the underside maybe its an obvious fix.

if its something internal with the trans or rear, you will have to start taking things apart.

You could always pull the diff cover off and see what happening in there, im sure it needs the diff oil changed anyway.

Re: Help

yeah ive tried putting the cars up on jacks. rotated both tires and there was no noise and even put the car in gear and let the wheels spin up on jacks. as far as the brakes go they seem fine. everything else seems tight so thats where im kinda stumped

Re: Help

have you taken the inspection plate off the bellhousing? see if something is loose in there? worth a shot.

its a removable plate on the bottom of the bellhousing. it unbolts, and you can see the flywheel/clutch setup. Unless its a different bell that doesnt have it.
