Clunk when accelerating

The car will always make a clunk noise when accelerating, it happens when the transmission shifts from 2 to 3.

Bad U-joints? Or something else with the transmission or the rest of the drivetrain/ differential?

Re: Clunk when accelerating

Probably should check the transmission mount.

Re: Clunk when accelerating

Could also be a motor mount.
Usually a U-Joint will 'clunk' when put into gear. But the mounts 'clunk' as you described on gear shifts. The 2-3 shift is usually the more 'violent' of the shifts - usually higher rpm's on that shift since the 1-2 shift usually happens too quickly (like in the middle of a normal turn) as opposed to the 2-3 shift that's usually always on a straight-away and us Camaro/Firebird folks like to really have our foot in it then

Re: Clunk when accelerating

I never thought about the motor mounts, I kinda had thoughts about the u-joints going bad because it does clunk when I put it in gear, put some times its not all that bad.

I guess it wouldn't hurt to get new mounts, the engine doesn't really move that much when I start it up or revv it with the hood open, but who knows.

As for the u-joints, they are still the original ones to the car so it wouldn't hurt to get new ones either.

+1 to trans mount. If bad replace with a poly one and never worry about it again. Very common problem.

Brand new one on the car.

Less than a few months old. And I know I didn't bust it, it did it before and after the replacement.
