rear end yoke slack

I just bought a 86 trans am for my wife with LT1 intake and T56 swap. I was working on it this week doing tune up and what not. Car is on lift and just for the heck of it I tryed to turn the aluminum driveshat and it surprised me it turns freely for about 1/4 turn?? the rear end is from a fourth gen and it does not wine of anything. What needs to be replaced? the slack is at the diff yoke, is this normal since it's a manual car? thanks for the advice... its the first manual car we've owned.

Re: rear end yoke slack

its its really 1/4 turn of slack just in the rear, the ring and pinion are pretty worn. Shouldnt have anywhere near that much slack.

ah I think I over exaggerated LOL, I double checked and it's about 1/8 or less...so I gotta replace ring and pinion?? What would happen if I drive it like that for a little while..that was not in my shopping list........... but good excuse to update to 4.11's
