Buy spare 700r for build, what vehicles to get one from?

I'm going 383 stroker with built 700r and moser 12 bolt. I'm planning to take my stock engine, transmission; rear end off and store. I want to buy a used 700r that I can build up with a kit from ProBuilt. I know that these transmission came in lots of vehicles and not sure which ones would work. Technically I should be looking for a 4L60E version of the 700R correct? What years and vehicles should I keep in mind when looking for one? I've seen transmission for sale from 90's trucks and vans. I read that pre 87 transmission aren't worth my time. Thanks for the help.

700R4 and 4L60 are the same thing... 4L60E is an updated version that's not really the same and requires a different computer to run the transmission.
Find yourself a core from a 87-92 V8 Fbody and call it a day. You can use transmissions from 4.3L rear wheel drive cars, or other applications, but why bother?

https://www.thirdgen.org/replace-700...c-transmission

This explains the reasoning for the 87+ years (they were a stronger build from factory), and what to look for if not sure of the year car the tranny came from.

Thanks for the info. Looking to find used 700r local that I could drive and pick up. Wondering if I could open up search options if I knew what other cars came with a compatible unit.

If you want the automatic WOT shifts to occur at about 5,000 rpm, then use a core from a 1988 and later truck or van. If you want the automatic WOT shifts to occur at about 5,500 rpm, then use a core from a 1988 and later Z28 transmission. Trucks and vans have the "plain jane" tail housing, the Z28 has three bolt holes going through the side of the tail housing to hold the torque arm.

Dana, thanks for info on three bolt holes. Will help me identify the "real mccoy".

I found a guy few hours away that has full 350 TPI engine and 700r taken out of an 89 iroc. Have a friends wedding nearby this weekend and will stop by to check it out. I need some new hobbies

Found this post with picture showing how to identify transmission year.
