lost posi?

So my car has always been posi and left 2 dark tire makes when launching hard. The other day I notices it was just laying down rubber from my passenger tire. My friend seems to think this happened because I didnt add the posi additive when I changed the gear fluid last time and I'll be ok after I correct that. Any ideas???

I wouldn't be surprised. Throw the GM additive in and see what happens--you only have the cost of the bottle to lose.

Re: lost posi?

The purpose of the limited slip additive is to smooth out the engage/disengage of the clutches... Leaving it out isn't going to keep the clutches from grabbing, but it might make them wear faster. Adding the additive now isn't going to fix any damage that's been done, and it's not going to magically bring back the limited slip. Don't waste your time and money on additive at this point, start saving for a new carrier.

then im sure your cones are bottomed I would take it easy on the rear until you can

A, buy new cones
B, machine your cones and shim the side gears
C, buy a working posi

right now your side gears are not putting any preload on the spider gears and the extra backlash will wear them out/ break fast

I helped write up a repair for these years ago it was a sticky

Re: lost posi?

There may be info in the following link, TPI, that will be interesting.

88, is there some disagreement on whether the 9-bolt limited slip requires the additive?

yes, and to be honest ive changed my mind a few times i dont think its needed as of now. I figure its a clutchless posi so there should be no chatter

Re: lost posi?

Most cone type differentials require at least one bottle of additive. The Auburn usually requires 2 bottles. Adding the additive now will not help at all with the OP. Yours is worn out and must be repaired.
