axle question
axle question
Ok a buddy of mine has a v6 camaro he put a 6 speed and v8 in. We started to put a posi carrier and a set of 4.10 gears in it and his carrier is 28 spline and his axles are 26. I have two cars 86 firebird 305 5 speed single traction and i also have a 82 trans am 305 auto with a posi in it. I plan to put the posi carrier in the 82 in my 86. If I take the axles out of the 82 for him to use will the 86 axles work in the 82 carrier. In other words are their a difference between axles posi to single and v6 to v8. thanks

Re: axle question
The 10 bolt has 26 spline axles from 82-89. 90-92 third gens have 28 spline axles. Other than that, the diffs are the same and you can mix and match parts. There's no reason the 28 spline axles and posi can't be installed in an earlier diff but nobody usually downgrades from 28 to 26 spline axles.
There is no V6/V8 diff in a third gen. Other than gear ratio and open or posi, the diffs are all the same.
If you have a 9 bolt diff, nothing is the same as it's a completely different make of diff. Nothing internally can be swapped with a 10 bolt.

Re: axle question
When I built my 83 camaro housing I put a 96 camaro posi in it with a set of 28 spline 91 transam axles.
If you want to use your posi, find a set of 90-92 axle shafts and put them in your axle. (I suggest putting new axle bearings in at the same time)
