Throttle valve cable?

I have seen it on here before..and i can't find the thread. What does this component do and what does it effect? I have an 86 trans am that was revamped..and its having major transmission issues for just being rebuilt. It's slamming into 2nd gear..and slamming gears when switching between park and drive and such. Sorry..i'm still new to all this mechanic stuffs..transmission is a "TH700R4 w/ corvette servo and spag, b&m transpak".
any help would be AWSOME

Re: Throttle valve cable?

I'm sure someone can go into great detail but it affects the transmission shifting and can cause damage if it's not adjusted correctly. Sounds like you may not want to use the car until it's done. The instructions to adjust it are in the manual or maybe the trans board somewhere. Search on TV?

Re: Throttle valve cable?

well i had this link bookmarked about using a pressure guage to make sure its set right. Because doing the adjustment with the clicks only gets it kinda close. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...ms-solved.html But actually adjusting the cable on a fuel injected car, somebody else will have to help there.

Re: Throttle valve cable?

@ base91- yeah..it hasn't been shifting properly since i bought it. Im having it looked at saturday. Im hoping i didn't damage the transmission thus far. Whoever installed this stuff didn't do it right. My OD is my drive gear.. and drive gear is OD. My speedometer is off by like 10mphs..and with the lunging...yeah..whoever set this car up failed at it. 330hp...and my red car with 190hp blows it away..not good.
@sparkytfl- Thanks for the link =) it's carborated luckily, but im still taking it to aamco. Best not to play with these things myself with so much wrong

Re: Throttle valve cable?

I knew a guy long ago who did his own trans swap. The shifter was completely reversed! All the way forward was 1st and all the way back was Park. Fun to drive.

Re: Throttle valve cable?

Oh I was looking at your other car in your info thats FI. If it's carbed, find the big metal button that i drew the arrowhead on here. You're going to have to press really hard on it with one hand (if it's like mine was you might even need some pliers to squeeze it). While holding that, you should be able to grab the cable sleeve behind the end-mounting-plastic-part and slide it back and forth (remember how it looks while slid all the way forward, take note of that). Slide it all the way back toward the driver seat. Now you get in the car and step on the gas pedal. It wont go all the way at first, you have to step really hard on it. It should suddenly go while making a snapping noise, which was the cable sliding forward suddenly to the right position. If while stepping on the pedal you had no resistance and the cable is still all the way back, or if the cable is slid all the way forward, then you might need either a new cable (it might be stretched) or new mounting bracket because its out of its range of adjustment.

That's the official way of getting it close. The thing with the pressure guage is just to be sure if you want it spot on. I imagine taking it to a repair shop thats all theyd do unless you specifically told them, and even then they might not have the info to do it right unless they're a dealer or you brought them the documents.

Is it off the same ammount the whole range, or does it get farther off the faster you go? If it's the second, and if somebody changed the transmission or the rear gears they should have changed the little speedometer gears in the side of the transmission. Very easy to do yourself.

It's the 2nd..and they changed the rear gears AND the transmission. I was told it's a cable?

Re: Throttle valve cable?

Well the mechanical cable going to your speedometer is spun by two gears in the tail end of the transmission. Knowing your tire size and rear ratio you select gears with the right number of teeth. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/sp...n_______va.htm The "driven gear" is easy to replace in less than half an hour, but first you'll need to see which color "drive gear" you have before you can choose and order it. I have charts in my manual so i can tell you which combinations of gears would work if you tell me your tire size and ratio.
