700-r4 slipping in drive and OD

Hey guys, I did a search and read through quite a few threads, just looking for some final thoughts before I pull the tranny.

The cars an '88 iroc 350-700r4 with just over 100k kms (60k miles)
first and second gears work properly but when it shifts into drive the car revs up and car slows down. I tried skipping 3rd and shifting directly to OD but I get the same result. Basically it slips once its out of 2nd.
I smelled the fluid and it doesn't really seem/smell burnt but I didn't really drive it much since this happened.
I'm assuming the transmission needs to be replaced and I have found a used replacement, just wondered if theres anything I should check before I start pulling it.
Thanks guys, Great forum by the way, its been tons of help with my project so far.

It sounds like your 3-4 clutches are wasted. I wish I had a better answer but you need to pull it and replace it.

yup and without tearing down that used one its kind of a gamble whether it is good or not. If your in northern california area I have a friend selling one that was working good recently rebuild for 300 bucks. not interested in shipping it anywhere.

I think your right, it sucks.
I got the tranny pulled outta the car yesterday and just picked up the used one this evening. the guy I bought it off of claims it worked when pulled, so I guess I'll take my chances.
Hopefully I can get it up and running soon.
Thanks for the reply!
