700R4 possible fluid level issue
700R4 possible fluid level issue
I have a 1990 700R4 that I installed and am just now testing out. I ran it around the block last Friday and had it parked since (needs TV cable adjustments). On Monday I needed to remove the dipstick. I put a pan underneath just in case. About 2 quarts of fluid came out.
I am not certain the dipstick is stock to this particular tranny. Knowing that it sat for a few days would this be considered a normal amount of fluid to come out? I am a bit worried about having it overfilled.
Tonight I plan on determining where the fill marks on the stick are in relation to the pan lip.
Does anyone know where the fluid level should sit with the engine running and trans fluid at normal temp?
Thanks,
Steve

Re: 700R4 possible fluid level issue
Sorry, you misunderstood, or more accuratly I didn't say it right.
I removed the dipstick tube out of the tranny. So the hole was open at the tranny. The seal is fine.
I know the fluid level raises when the engine turned off, which is normal (comes from the converter). I am just not certain how high is normal and if my dipstick goes into the tranny case the right ammount (or if the fill lines are at the right location).
So when an engine is running should the fluid level be at the top of the pan? Should it be higher or lower?
I know the 700's are very finicky, but maybe I am being to careful?

Re: 700R4 possible fluid level issue
2 quarts seems a little excessive...now if it say for a week with the dipstick tube removed then that is very probable.
Re: 700R4 possible fluid level issue
Well I carefully measured the where the dipstick tube sat, where the marks were, etc. The lower line of the fill range marks lines up with the pan rail. I will use that for my full mark. So I was actually one quart above the pan rail before.

Oh. Never thought about going to the junkyard and getting the correct dipstick and tube?
Re: 700R4 possible fluid level issue
I think it's more the fact that The tranny has gone through several vehicles and I don't"know" if this one is correct or not. I needed to know what the "running" fluid level should be so I could test my stick and know if I had the right level or not. In my case the tube has been bent and tweaked to fit by me as well as PO's and the lip that should rest tight to the seal is up a little bit. I removed the tube and id some measuring. So I am fairly certain I know where the correct level should be.
If I bought another tube and stick I'd just have to modify it to fit well and then go through the same measurement process.
Anyway, I am good to go now.
