Rear axle swap

I have a 1990 chevy camaro rs. Will a rear axle from a 1985 z28 posi disc fit? Do I need an adjustable proportioning valve? And do I need to change anything about the brakes

Yes. No. No.

All these could have been answered by looking & reading on TGO. Axle swaps are nothing new here.

You will find people with opinions going both ways.

Technically for the "best" performance? You probably should. But I know many people who have swapped from drums to discs & experienced no problems.

Re: Rear axle swap

You mean with the calipers mounted to the front of the rotor? I don't think I've seen a 3rd or 4th gen rear end that way.

The driver's side will be clocked toward the rear, the pass side the front. More info about master, combination valve, speedo gears and parking brake cables can be found in the following link:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...-10-bolts.html

Tach won't matter. For speedo gears (T5 and 700R4), check the stickies at the top of the page.

So that you have 10.5" rotors and iron Delco-Moraine calipers on all four corners?

You could, but the 11.6" rotors and alum PBR's calipers are superior to the Delco's. The best idea would be to swap the PBR's to the 85 rear and eventually upgrade the front to match.

Re: Rear axle swap

I'd like the 11.6 rotors and alum pbrs on the rears no sense in down grading. Will I have any issues at a part store asking for them to put on my car with a different rear end

The process isn't difficult, but you'll have to remove the axles. Here's info that you'll need:

Re: Rear axle swap

If you put the bigger brakes on the older rear end & you'll still have the smaller axles. 26 vs 28 spline.

And it is way easier just to swap the whole rear end, than it is to swap brakes onto it.

Re: Rear axle swap

Since I have been having trouble finding one it might just be easier for me to get this axle and put the 28's on it and put the new calipers pads, back plates and lines

Re: Rear axle swap

Yeah but if I can get an 89-92 then I won't have to change the axles or anything else unless they are bad. I may just have to change the seals and fluid I'll keep looking I'm waiting on a reply from someone who has an 89 with 411 gears
