Rear End help
I am wrapping up my 383 project. it has about 500est hp. What is the best rear end i can put under it. And where can i get it from?
Re: Rear End help
A Moser 12 bolt or 9 inch would be best. The 7.5 just isn't quite up to the power that you will probably be making. The 12 bolt is the cheapest bolt in complete rear end. The 9 inch can be built partly from new parts and partly from used parts, so you can build it cheaper, but it won't be all new. A complete 12 bolt with Eaton Posi starts around $2220 and the 9 inch housing and axle package is around $950. You can add a junk yard chunk to that and come out around $1000 maybe. You can use GM brakes from a 8.5 10 bolt or S truck with the 4 bolt backing plates.

Re: Rear End help
Does anyone know if stock 2:73 gears can be changed to say 3:23 by changing the gears out in the pumpkin without pulling the whole rear end, or is it best to just swap the whole rear end out. also, i am guessing it could not be converted to Posi without a rearend swapout? Car is 92 bird with crate 350, but wimpy stock 2:73 gears. thanks,
Re: Rear End help
You can swap gears and differetnials in the rear end. I do it just about every day. There are several combinations that you must know before doing any of this. You need to look at the rear end sticky and get all of the information from that.

Re: Rear End help
Thanks. I can not find a sticker for the rear end, but I can tell you that my axle code is 6HP which according to the Haynes manual is a 1988-1989 2.73 standard axle. The car is a 92 so they must have used some left over rearend stock. There is no 6HP listed for 1990-92 axle codes I would like to go to at least 3.23 to handle the 330 HP crate motor. Is there a resource where i can find out more about the procedure of swapping out the gears and leaving the same rear end in the car. I would like to estimate cost and how complcated the procedure is. I am not sure if the axels would need to be changed etc. I would also love to convert it to posi. I may find out that it would be easier to swapout the entire rearend, but I would think changing out the gears in the pumpkin would be cheaper and less labor. Thanks for any advice you can give.
