A tiny bit of play straight in and out is normal. The axle shafts hit the pin in the middle when you push them in, and the C-clip when you pull out. There shouldn't be much play though, like 1 or 2mm at most..

well it feels like it moves more than that mabye a 1/4 of an inch if not a little more
Re: rear end problem help please!!!
Don't worry about it. Just drive it and save your money. The axles are not going to come out, as long as you don't break the Auburn. If the auburn is worn out then it's going to be weaker, so don't beat on it too much.
This is all assuming that you have the Auburn.

Does it, or did it sping both tires when doing a burnout? If it did then it probably had the Auburn. There were only 2 limited slip differentials offered in the 3rd gen and they were the Auburn and the Governor Lock. The Gov Lock usually doesn't have excessive axle end play from wear, but the Auburn will.

You probably need to remove the cover and see what is in there. You are probably going to find a bunch of metal sludge in the bottom of the housing. You need to find out why the axles are moving as much as they are.
