tring to decide on rear
So i'm lost as for what i'm going to do for a rear. I was pricing the one they have on spohn web site and i cant see spending almost 3 grand on a rear. I do want one that will bolt right in.
if you go to this link it has my engine specs.

any help or suggestion on what to do or what to get would be great. I was thinking about swaping in a 4th gen rear but how tough are they. I was also debatting on 3.73's or 4.11's dont really care about getting on the high way.
Thanks for any help.

4th gen rear is the same strength as a 3rd gen rear. You can get a moser housing and axle package 9" setup for under a grand, and use an inexpensive junkyard 9" center chunk. That the cheapest way to do it.
Or just leave the stock one alone and hope for the best.

when you say center is that gear's to or do i buy them seperate.
and my other thing is the brakes. i know most of them if not all you cant use stock brakes.

The Moser 12 bolt is about $2220 with the Eaton Posi and 30 spline c clip axles. You can use second gen drum brakes on it, or S10 brakes with the 4 bolt backing plate. You can get a bolt in 9 inch Ford housing and axle package for about $960 and use whatever chunk you want in it. The 9 inch can be shipped by UPS.

But not all 3rd gen rears are equal. Late 3rd gens are stronger than early ones (28 vs 26 spline axles) and the 98-02 rear differentials are stronger than the 91-97 differentials.
Then there is the 9-bolt. Stronger than the 3rd gen 10-bolt, greater than the late 3rd gens & only marginally weaker than the 98-02 rears. Then there is the benefit of bolt in axle retainer instead of the 10-bolts c-clips for the axles. $150 to convert a 10-bolt from a c-clip to a bolt in axle retainer.
If 98-02 cars (the axles)are getting really good performance bone stock, off the showroom floor.....Just how weak are they? What is the fastest stock axle 98-02 axle LS1 car out there?

Re: tring to decide on rear
or go the 12 bolt route that big gear head suggested, it may cost a little more though, you would have to research it
Re: tring to decide on rear
I don't think the 3rd or 4th gen rear end is going to hold up to a 383 with slicks.
The Moser 12 bolt is the lightest and uses less power. The 9 inch can be built cheaper if you use some used parts, but if you use all new parts the 9 inch will be the most expensive.

Re: tring to decide on rear
Late 89 cars through LT1's (93-97) and LS1's (98+) have 28-spline axles and a 7.625 ring gear. Given that, I'd say their strength is pretty much the same. The LS1's have perhaps a better limited slip and braking system.
