Stuck in first gear
Stuck in first gear
Hello. My 88 Camaro has serious timing issues...chain actually jumped...visually verified. Just before I tore into it to replace the chain, the tranny started started sticking in first gear...never went to second. Is it possible that the timing had gotten so bad that the tranny wouldn't shift?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Stuck in first gear
If you are able to go fast enough for it to reach a shift point, it should shift regardless of the engine timing. One thing to check is the TV cable. If this comes out of adjustment or sticks, it would cause it to stay in 1st gear. If this happens, do not drive it AT ALL! It WILL tear up clutches and parts inside the tranny.
Check to make sure it is adjusted right first. I would see if it has slack or pulled taught with the throttle at idle, and pull on the throttle side to see if there is a spring action on the transmission end. Basically just tug on the cable and see if you can feel it being pulled back in by a little spring in the tranny. Then proceed to adjust it properly. There are instructions on doing this in the technical article section

Re: Stuck in first gear
My car is also stuck in first gear-- but I drove it around the block at 10 mph. Thats all i could do to see if I could get stuff warmed up in the tranny--Someone told me to warm her up and put her in gear and just slam the pedal to the floor to FREE UP what ever is sticking--- I "did not" to that yet. All i did was to drive in around the block very carefully and SLOW--- Did I ruin it by taking it out around the block.??? thanks Guys- I need Help real bad. John

Well i changed dropped the pan and replaced fluid and filter/ I'll be checking that governer for excessive wear while under the car. I Hope that it was the worn Governer that caused my beiing stuck in 1st gear.

Re: Stuck in first gear
This is usually caused by the governor gear going away. They are plastic and wear away until they look like an apple core.
It is located under the dome cover, drivers side, toward rear of trans. Pop the cover off and the governor pulls out. The gear is replaceable.

Thanks RBob, can I get a replacement at the local auto parts store or do I have to order online?

When re-installing the cover do not hit the center, hit it around the edges.
