Re: swapping to posi
The easiest way is to swap the entire rear end. Unless you know how to set up gear lash inside the rear end, swapping in just a posi unit is something you'll hafta pay a mechanic who knows how to do that.
Get you a 4th gen rear end & you can get better brakes to, especially by using a 98-02 rear end. But the rotors might be too big, depending on which wheels you currently have.

If your engine is stock, a preprogrammed aftermarket chip won't do anything.
If your engine is modded, a preprogrammed aftermarket chip won't do anything.
Get the hint - preprogrammed aftermarket chips don't do anything - except waste your money!
Shift kit will only make shifting gears 'stiffer' in a sense - won't help make burnouts.
The only thing that's going to come from 'burnouts' is the need to replace/rebuild your tranny sooner. Let's face it - the only way you can burn anything in a 305TBI car is to hold the brake, and mash the gas at the same time - not good for the car. Hope you understand, posi rears were not intended to get 'cooler' burnouts - they were intended to achieve the exact opposite - better traction. Anyone can hold the brake mash the gas and burnout any car - doesn't make you a star in anyone's eyes - I had a 1972 Toyota Corolla that would burn rubber all day, didn't mean it (or myself) were in any sense of the meaning "cool". Running with the big dogs requires traction - a 15 second car can easily beat a 10 second car if the 10 second car loses traction.
Your car is almost 20 years old. If you like it, and want to continue to drive it without expensive issues to repair, then respect it and forget the burnouts. Although most 3rd gen folks want to go faster always, we also love our cars for the styling, and we strive to make them faster and better while respecting their integrity and taking good care of them.
OK - no more lecture ...
Most folks that continuously do burnouts, either have the funds to rebuild trannys and rear ends alot, or use a locker that locks the front brakes without locking the rears.
Rear gears swaps have to be done by a professional - requires very accurate shimming. On top of the parts, a shop is going to charge you probably $500 to do the job. You can get a 4th gen rear usually under $300, and swap it in - direct swap except E-brake cables - easy to rig those up as long as the 4th gen rear still has ebrake cables attached. Best 4th gen rear is 1998 - 2002 - they have the larger LS1 rear disc brakes, but you have to have 16" wheels to use it.
