Shift Cable

Ok... I got a 1991 Chevy Camaro RS 3.1 V6 with the automatic transmission. I bought this car for 450 bucks. the only problems that it had when i bought it was body damage to the front, passanger fender and door and the drivers side t-top is cracked. Besides those problems the car ran outstanding good. one day i was driving, i punched it, as soon as i did, the rear of the trans slammed up and hit the body. so i replaced the rear mount. nothing else happen for about 2 or 3 months... then i broke my shift cable trying to shift it into gear. had to drive home in 1st gear...only about 1 mile away... replaced shift cable. that fixed it for a while...about a month....then it broke again and it i just kept replacing it. so far i have been through 8 or 9 shift cables.

i have noticed that the actual cable on the inside of all the plastic isn't broke on every single shift cable. there are only 2 spots that i see that it keeps breaking at. some how the guide plastic that covers like 70% of the cable pulls out at the big plastic pieces that connect to the trans and the shifter and holds the cable in place.

here is my question.... is there some kind of secrete or special way to put these cables in? just to makes sure someone please tell me how you install one so i can make sure that i am doing this right. i am almost to the point to where i just wanna take the manual trans in my truck and put it in the camaro.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Shift Cable

El Crapo Autozone/Advance cables right? They are made overseas and are total junk. Get a shift cable from the dealer and it won't break.

Re: Shift Cable

Been 4 years since I bought one - but it still works great 4 years later. No matter what the dealership charges, it's got to be less than the total spent on the 8 Oreilly's cables! Are you making them stick to their 1 year warranty? Check with your dealer and see, dealer prices vary alot. NAPA also sells one for $47.50 - a different brand than Oreilly's. But if it were me, I'd go straight to dealer. Shifter cable is one part everyone has trouble with UNLESS it comes from dealer.
