Okay everyone I have one for ya. This may be a no brainer to some, but for me it's just confusion and uncertainty...

So i'm changing the oil into my G-force T5 (for all who don't know yes it's a WC. I don't think they accept non) and i didn't want to buy their specialty oil if i didn't have to. This is basically because i have some 75W-140 synthetic sitting around.

I asked them whether i could use this gear oil or some other oil aside from theirs. This is part of what they sent "As long as the oil is fully synthetic. You will need 1-3/4 quarts 75W/140 Fully synthetic with 1 qt. Mobil 1 ATF synthetic".

What do you all think about this? would you risk mixing them both and hope it's the right combo?

P.S. The trans has a dog box and straight cut gears in it. aka zero syncros

 

okay well hopefully someone can chime in soon. Seeing as i'm probably going to just trust it and put it in tonight or tomorrow morning. Any input is appreciated.

Why would you question what the Mfg told you?

 

That mix would be fine for your box. Keep in mind some people use ATF in engine oil just prior to an oil change for the detergent properties.

Gear oil is not used in the WC units because their fibre lining of the blocker rings swells due to it. Hence the ATF in OEM units.

 

Do you trust everything that any vendor says with complete trust?... Assuming that they are always right seems like a good way to set yourself up for a fault. You do know what they say about assuming right?... anyways so does always assuming they're wrong though , but always checking is never a bad idea.

My point exactly. That's why i'm hesitant and want more opinions on whether people think this is a good mix or not.

P.S. That's nice he knows what he's talking about... I think he does too... in fact i think he's one of the most knowledgeable people on here. I'm still not trusting everything vendors say...

What does everyone think about this mix??? I'm thinking it should be fine in terms of it's use, but in terms of me having leeway in haggling with G-force if the transmission has an issue i'm not sure if it's worth the risk...

 

well whats the price difference between their oil and your mix idea? how often do you change your fluid? the cost i imagine is nowhere near the risk of making the vendor mad. if you have a gforce trans...its becuase you needed one and the chance of BOOM is higher as it is

 

Wow, really? Use the mix they suggest. There's probably a reason for it.

 

im with everybody else still, they made a point, very clearly it seems, that you need to use a specific fluid and a specific mix. I would rather spend a couple bux and do that, than chance it and cause damage to a 2k$ trans

it may have something to do with the lack of syncros, the trans may not shoft well without the right mix

 

Well getting the synthetic ATF is all i need for the mix. That is around 10 bucks. I can't remember the price of G-forces oil. I remember it's somewhat pricey but not that bad. I just kinda need my car back on the road and even waiting for shipping on it could be too long. My current DD is toast and so this is going to be the new daily.

I just came to the conclusion of what i'm going to do. For a current solution i'm just going to put this mix in for now. I'm feeling somewhat confident about it and order some of their specialty oil. That way I can just change it out when it gets here and i have time.

 

Knowing first-hand, I'll admit the price of thier GF2000 fluid is overly expensive. Last time I bought a quart, it was around 38 bucks. At the time I didn't realize that I was one of the first people to buy a GM T-5 from them with an upgraded gearset and mainshaft.

When G Force recieved my order for a quart of thier oil, the VP gave me a call at my house to see how my trans was holding up! I had been running the trans for over a year. When I got done speaking with him for a while, he told me he'd send me 2 quarts for free!!

So I ended up buying one and got two free....I'm sure that probably won't happen again, but I thought that was pretty cool...a vendor that actually cares AFTER the sale....a rarity these days IMO.

Be aware....if you choose to not run thier recommended oil and you should break it, they won't help you much if at all - and from I understand, they'll check. Personally, I'd cough up the bucks if I needed to change my oil....

 

I've used half & half ATF & gear lube in transmissions for decades. Works great. Not rocket science. If that's what they say to use, go for it. If they call for synth, big whoop; adds $5 to the bill. Get synth.

Again, not rocket science here. Just a car. Do what makes sense and don't outsmart yourself with paralysis by analysis. Just do it.
