700r4 shift problem + Torque Converter problem
700r4 shift problem + Torque Converter problem
So here is my delima, i switched my car over to a TH350 for a while and soon switched back to a 700r4 bc my gear is to high (370) to drive on the highway, i sold the 700r4 that was in the car like an idiot and had to buy one for $200, along with a bran new 2200-2500 stall torque converter bc i have a 383.
After my install i went to take it up the road and the trans didn't want to shift past third, and soon after it wont even come out of first. I tried gunning it a little then letting off the gas and nothing happend wont shift. And after gunning it the last time something weird happend and my rpms will not return to idle, stay high at like 3000 rpms.
T.V. is hooked up correctly with right adapter from holley, has proper fluid amounts. Square electrical factory plugg is not plugged in driverside of transmission.
Do i have a bad torque converter? does that square electrical plugg matter? and is it rebuild time for the 700r ??? Local shop will do it for $750 with new torque converter.

Re: 700r4 shift problem + Torque Converter problem
sad to say Ive never heard of such problems and a 700s being fixed by an adjustment, if the TV cable is off any, it can toast one quick and far as I see it, they work right or they don't.
I wont willing own one, spend loot on 406LE or stick with a 3 speed n get a bolt on OD, both last forever with little problems as I see it, as you constantly see 700r4 problem threads on all GM boards, very few for the other two.
Id say you picked up a $200 core for rebuild

It seems that you might have 2 problems
1 The TV cable.......
If the tv cable is too tight you will not be able to shift into 4th gear ( it has too much presure) but ....... this may be a bracket problem or bad tv cable due to the 3000 rpm thing ........ look at that first.....
BUT>>>>>>>>> Make Small ajustments........ to much slack will burn it up
2 Pull the Govener and make sure that there is nothing blocking it...... the cylinder inside should move free........ hope it is an easy fix for you.
The plug on the side is for lock up to work and yes it should be hooked up to a switch to turn on and off
