92 RS Automatic Shifter Cable Adjustment?

I have a 92 RS automatic that the PO broke the shifter cable, and replaced it before I bought the car. Now the indicator on the shifter does not line up with what gear the car is in. And the car will not go all the way into park, I have to push it up as far as I can and use the e-brake to get the car to not roll. Also I have to feel what gear I'm in when putting it in drive. I've been driving around town in overdrive, when I should be in just normal drive. But I can't "feel" if the car is in drive or a lower gear. Is there an adjustment for this cable? Or is there something else wrong with my shifter assembly? Thanks.

Re: 92 RS Automatic Shifter Cable Adjustment?

There is a very small amount of adjustment where the cable connects to the linkage arm on the tranny - under car driver side. But it's a very very small amount.

The indicator on the shift plate doesn't have anything to do with the cable - sounds like when the PO took it apart to replace cable he/she didn't get the indicator 'lined up' with the shifter before putting it back together.

BTW - OD is fine for in town - there's really rarely any need to use anything but OD - just drop it in OD and go. Every so often, you'll hit a stretch of road where the torque converter lock up wants to go in/out because of the grade, speed, rpms, whatever - then some folks use D to raise the rpm's slightly and stop the torque converter from "hunting" for a good spot. But otherwise, always use OD - it saves gas even in town at 35mph!

Re: 92 RS Automatic Shifter Cable Adjustment?

In this day and age, I'm really surprised the car makers even put 1 and 2 as an option. I guess in a very mountainous region, use of the lower gears can save wear/tear on brakes when decending steep grades by allowing the engine/tranny to keep the speeds down. And if hauling a boat or something it might be beneficial. But most folks are NOT boat hauling in a Camaro anyway.

Okay, so that adjustment on the cable your talking about, is that what I'm looking for so I can get the car into park? That is my biggest concern, the car will not engage into park fully. It will get out of reverse, but not far enough into park to engage and keep the car from rolling.

Re: 92 RS Automatic Shifter Cable Adjustment?

Yep - you can try to move the cable attachment at the lever on the tranny - but like I said there ain't much "adjustment" there.

Also note - if there is not enough adjustment, then the cable is bad, and it'll need replaced AGAIN! Trust me on this - even if it 'looks' fine, it could be busted inside. If your previous owner used a cable from ANYWHERE else besides the dealer, then I can guarantee it's busted again. I went through 3 cables in a week from Autozone, Napa, Carquest, etc (ie not the dealer) ... and then I realized they ALL were made in India, and they were all junk!

If you can't get it adjusted, pay the extra, get a GM dealer cable, and save yourself the headache! I don't like paying the dealer extra when I don't have to, but in the case of the shifter cable, it's a necessity. Search "shifter cable" here at TGO, and you'll see many other posters describe the same - nothing except the GM cable actually works!

Re: 92 RS Automatic Shifter Cable Adjustment?

Wow I wish I would have read this earlier!!! I have a new cable from Rick's camaro in route to my house. I snapped the CarQuest replacement after ONLY 6 months of use & I ONLY use the car on weekends!!!

I was trying to adjust it, because as the OP describes, one day the car just started turning on in Reverse....ouch! When I first installed the CarQuest one 6 months ago all worked fine until a month ago. Then about a month ago, I would run through the gears into Park. Well the car would stay in reverse....WTF?? I tried to adjust the CarQuest one & it snapped by the tranny mount (where the plastic piece is).

Will any GM/Chevy dealer order this for you?

Re: 92 RS Automatic Shifter Cable Adjustment?

So today I go to my local GM/Chevy dealer to get the aforementioned OEM shifter cable as recommended above. The parts guy tells me that the OEM cable is discontinued & no longer made by GM.....WTF?

So where have you folks gotten your OEM shifter cables for your 700R4 from? Looks like here locally in Jax I'm stuck with the "el cheepo" replacements. I'm considering getting an OEM one at a junk yard, but they might be bad or hard to find.

Any help on where I can get an original GM cable is much appreciated!!
