700R4 TV cable

How do you know if you got the tv cable tight enough and if the shifts are firm enough.

I pulledthe thing out with the button and then had someone put pedal to the floor so I could slide it back in let off and then had them let go of the pedal.

Now my shifts are very firm and quick and the mid and full thorttle shift are better and its easier to go faster, pedal is more sensitive. It did not shift down this quick going up hills before holding my speed. also slow throttle progession is much better on how it shifts. The thing I notice is the upshifts take a tad longer under light throtle but the car is quicker overall and shifts are faster more pedal is used.

I tried adjusting it last year but could not get my cable to ratchet out once the pedal is let go but I did manage to get the cable tighter enough it should be fine for awshil.

Is the cable streched maybe is why its not ratcheting out and how should my car shift.

89 305 tbi non swirly heads because of the long block still center bolt.

Does my car shift right or is my cable at its limits of being warn out and cant ratcher back anymore?

Re: 700R4 TV cable

You are not adjusting it right. You are supposed to hold in the button while you slide in the black part all the way. Then push the pedal to the floor. When you do that it should ratchet out.

Re: 700R4 TV cable

That is what I do before but it does not ratchet out and the shifts stay soft and cable stays soft so maybe I need a new cable if I have to slide it back all the way to firm the shifts. It shifts better then it ever did before this way.

Re: 700R4 TV cable

mine doesn't ratchet it out either unless I hold the button while someone pushes the pedal. I also checked other cars at the junkyard and none would ratchet out.
I bought a pioneer cable and it was junk

Re: 700R4 TV cable

The (Right way) to adjust a 700R4 TV cable is to slide it all the way in. Then get in the car a depress the accelerator to the floor. You will hear it click (ratchet out a few times) It should work fine there. This works If you car has (the stock set up) bracket and cable. Unless you of course changed things like a new intake and carb. Like me and then you can go nuts like I did trying to get it right LOL. Ive actuall been having problems with a mushy 3rd and 4th after my rebuild thinking of adding a trans go shift kit hopeing to get a harder shift. Good luck with the adjustment let me know how it works out.

Re: 700R4 TV cable

You probably do. Try checking the transmission end. What I did was unbolt the cable housing from the transmission and pulled it out without unhooking it and pulled it up and down to see how smooth it was. Give that a shot. If it seems alright, then you need a new cable. Buy a GM one if at all possible.

Re: 700R4 TV cable

It seems to me that it locks so it doesnt ratchet back or it would keep getting looser.

My car came with a boxd of old parts and recipes yes I have everything even a business card and papers from first owner and his **** in the back. I would think the idea is to keep it tight at full thorttle but not all the way so it has wear room. I checked mine compared to that site and mine it out two clicks from full tv barely enough to tell.

For now harder is better then softer for a 700r4 and I recently changed the fluid and filter then flushed entire thing using cooler lines made a mess but worth it and changed using half valvoline max life and half mobil1 and redline d4 atf. My transmission is in great shape this car was owned by a mechanic and his dad was also one who passed it onto him and now me I work in a shop just got done training in college.

Take the time to watch this video and properly understand how to adjust your TV Cable before you make a several hundred dollar mistake and burn up your transmission.

Re: 700R4 TV cable

Hi all
I'm highly confused on TV cable adj 85 camaro 305 vin h q-jet from 73 Olds welded arm from 85 emmissions carb do to elim of computer. Have all stock brackets for carb connections

I just had carb off and apart again and after seeing nothing wrong inside installed 4psi fuel regulator which fixed the leaking from accel pump top problem.

So just viewed ALL TV cable adjust videos and set mine as so
1. press button on cable block
2. push in cable (black head) all the wasy which was at least an inch out at idle position, let off of button
3. move throttle arm to full throttle
4. black head came out only about 1/4"

just test drove and now going very slow shifts into 2nd at 7 mph (soft) and 3rd at about 17mph -

prior to this adj was shifting at 13 (hard) and 23 (soft) with the black head way out as mentioned above!! I do not understand at all, as videos say it should shift into 2nd about 17-20! and cable should be taught at idle position (no slack)

In looking at it when I returned, the black head was still in the same place and then I pulled on the cable "wire" in front of where it is connnected on the arm and the cable wire pulled out easily about 1/2"

One other point is I did have to add approx 2 pints of fluid to bring it to full as the speedo cable is leaking pretty good-not sure if this could have any bearing on this though, I would think not

Can anyone HELP and what should the shift points be on a stock eng/trans
and how can I correct this "slack in the wire when the head is only 1/4" out now??
AND a basic question, should the wire be looser if the black head is farther in or out at idle position of the arm??
thanks all
tom
