Re: Looking to know basics about auto transmission

There is no compatible 5 speed automatic transmission available that I know of. Or 6 speed automatic. Or anything other than what you have.

Do you want an automatic, or do you want a manual transmission?

If you want an automatic, you have it - that's it, that's all there is - there's nothing else available, and no need since there's nothing wrong with a good 700R4 automatic. Even the automatics from the 4th gen cars are not compatible - since they were computer controled and you don't have the computer (which is expensive).

If you want a manual tranny, there's alot of options - cheapest being a T5 5 speed from same years camaros/firebirds (but they are weak) about $800 maybe with all needed parts. Next best is a T-56 from a 1993 - 2002 camaro/firebird - maybe $2000 max with all needed parts. Otherwise, there's many other brands of manual trannies you can buy, starting at about $2000 up to more than you have.

To swap in a manual transmission you need the pedals, clutch assembly, etc. as well as the transmission. You have to cut out the holes in the firewall for the pedals and such.

BMW is coming out with an 8 speed auto. Nothing like keeping the engine at an exact rpm as your speed changes. The engine must have a real narrow powerband.

My Ford F350 has a 5 speed auto.

Off topic - but last weekend I saw a F650 at a car show - talk about a case of "compensation for lacking in other areas"! That was a beast! At $4.00 a gallon for the deisel fuel, it would take 3 times the monthly payment in fuel expense to drive it 20 miles to work everyday! Glad it ain't mine!
