T-56 match up
Hey everybody quick question thats probably been answer already. Will a t-56 tranny from a 93-97 camaro/firebird bolt on correctly to a 305 or 350 from a third gen camaro? If not what would be the necessary requirements to make it work?

Re: T-56 match up
All SBCs from 55-2000 have the same bolt pattern on the bell housing. So yeah, they all bolt up.
Only unusual matter is the flywheel, if the motor is from 85 back.

Re: T-56 match up
There's nearly zero reason to get an 85-down SBC for a healthy street driven build except to build a 400 SBC
The rear main seal on an 85-down leaks more easily than an 86-up one-piece.
86-up had one piece rear main and takes a cheap production LT1 T56 flywheel. Those aren't much more than $100. The LT1 T56 flywheel for an 85-down costs $250 or more.
And 87-up had roller cam provisions.
Later model blocks wear less than earlier ones too.
Every time I see someone who is so proud of their 1974 Camaro 350 they picked up for "cheap" only to have to spend more on a flywheel and time cleaning up leaks, I cringe.
If the website you get an engine from from doesn't tell you enough information to tell what year it is, run away.
READ THE T56 SWAP STICKY. You haven't (obviously) and will learn a lot.

We'll actually I was thinking about the LS series motor's. 98-2003 have different bolt patterns.

Re: T-56 match up
For V8s, GMC vans didn't have the LS engines across the board until 2003 or 2004.
Drill and tap the 12:00 hole on a non-LS SBC and the LS bellhousing pattern works fine, crank depth and flywheel attachment notwithstanding.
TIG and drill the 12:00 hole on a non-LS SBC bellhousing and it works on the LS engines,
crank depth and flywheel attachment notwithstanding.
Are we done hijacking the thread?

Re: T-56 match up
TPI was introduced in 85.
Not sure how that's related to the T-56...
The 86-up engines have a 1-pc rear main seal; 85 back is 2-pc. The flywheel flange is different therefore the flywheel is different. Since there's no T-56 application from 85-back (the T-56 was introduced in 93, and there's no such thing as "features from the future") there's also no T-56 flywheel for a motor from 85-back.
The LT1 T-56 won't fit to a LSx motor; the clutch gear (the thing uninformed people call the "input shaft") is a different length.
If you're buying a used engine from somebody, ask em what year it is before plunking down yer money. If they can't tell you, have em send you a pic of the flywheel flange. If they can't or won't do that, take your business elsewhere.
See the "sticky" thread on this forum, and the thread in the FAQ, before asking any more questions. It's ALL THERE. You can read it ALL and learn ALOT, doesn't require somebody spoon-feeding it a little at a time.
