opinions on a swap
opinions on a swap
ok so i have read the threads about swaping to a 5 speed and everything but i still have some questions.
So i have a 82 trans am with a th200 and am looking to swap it out, i have a old 350 short tail trans from a old project that would swap right in except for the kit i would need to buy from jegs or summit. But i would really like to do a 5 speed swap since i am goin to be puttin a tranny in it. And i can get all the swap parts i think like
1.trans
2. crossmember
3.pedals
4. slave cylinder n everyting
5.center console
6 clutch flywheel
But see i have never done a swap like this i have been a mechanic and everything for a while so i know my stuff but looking at the threads about the swap it kinda makes me think twice. Just looking for some opinions and help. As far as parts and what u guys might think. Thanks

Re: opinions on a swap
Determination is the one tool you can't buy, but the one tool most needed.
It's a matter of deciding what you want, then jumping in and making it work. I've not personally done the swap, but if it's what I wanted, I've have no problem jumping in. I might have problems along the way that need solved, some easy, some not - but such is life Grasshopper.

Re: opinions on a swap
One more thought .... if going through the trouble of a manual swap, I'd choose a T56 instead - that way I'd already have a trans capable of handling any future engine upgrades. But certainly not as cheap as the T5 swap. And the main issue in an automatic car is setting up the pedals - so I suppose once that's done, swapping from a T5 to a T56 would be easy later down the road.

You should definitely remove everything from a donor car in the junkyard.
That way, you can get everything you need and you know exactly how it is installed in the car.
