shifter replacment!!

hey all,

i going to swap my T5 out and will take a th700r4 in the camaro.

i only have to know how i must build on the shifter in the console!

i have a manual shifter now so there is a big hole in the console.
maybe i take a B&M shifter or the original shifter.

what would be the best option for me because that big hole down there?
i have not the original brackets on that location like you all that have original a automatic transmision.

i have search on some universal shifters from B&M but don`t know what to do.

who could help me? it would be nice if you have some nice pics of a swap from manual to automatic.

d.vanmierle@chello.nl

thanks dennis

Re: shifter replacment!!

I think most go from auto to manual instead.
The shifter should not be too bad. Weld a plate or even screws and sealant to fill the hole. All you will need is a small round hole for an automatics shifter cable.

As for what shifter, the automatics have some brackets welded to the floor where the shifter mounts to. You may be able to mount a shifter on blocks to put it at the right height.
Also what are you going to do with your console? Put an automatics top plate on there?
If you do go with a B&M or Hurst shifter you may need the kind that ratchets in gears from 4 to 3,2 and 1. The stock automatic shifter plate is not long enough for the throw of an aftermarket shifter that does not ratchet.

Re: shifter replacment!!

thanks for your good explain about my shifter.
i know i must make a hole for the cable, and must fix the big hole thats for now.

i still don`t know what shifter i take.i read some bad info about the B&M shifter.some say it hard to shift in some gears.

the original shifter is a lot cheaper and look good also.
my plan was to change the shifterplate only on the top of the console.

do you know some people who did the same swap like me?

Dennis

Re: shifter replacment!!

I had a B&M in my 84 Z28 and I will never go with B&M again. I was hard to shift. So hard that my brother ripped the handle off) Also the B&M made to fit in the 3rd gen console would hit the plate and stripped out the screw holes. Every time I would click down into 3,2, or 1 it would pop up from the console.

I'll try to find out what Hurst I used in my mom'e S10 but the Hurst works great. Its a simpler design that does the exact same thing as the B&M. Shifts real smooth and easy. The only difference is this Hurst you lift and push on the shifter for its lock out. THe B&M had a lever. I'll still go with Hurst from now on.

Nothing wrong with the original shifters. You know they will fit and the cable is short. The aftermarket shifters have a long cable that needs to be looped around.

Re: shifter replacment!!

okey thanks for the explain about that B&M shifter.

i think i go original !!! haha

i only must make a bracket on my tunnel because the original automatic cars hase a bracket there to bolt up the shifter.

i don`t have one.

That is just a small bump in the road to get over.
Depending on how you want to bolt it down, you could easily make some short spacer to fit between the shifter and the floor.

Never bothered to measure.
But if I take my shifter plate off, or when you get the shifter which ever comes first, I'll measure and take a pic if I can.
