Re: 3.73 gear installing parts questions

Alot of that depends on what rear you have now, and EXACTLY what you just bought.

If you have the stock 305 TBI rear, it's probably 2.73s, which means it's a 2 series carier, which means you need either the "special" thick 3 series gears for going on a 2 series carrier, or you need a ring gear spacer. If you go with the "special" gears, then you can't ever put a 3 series carrier in there. OTOH if you go with the spacer, there's potentially other problems.

You need new pinion bearings, for sure. Virtually impossible to remove them without destroying them. So as far as small parts, you're up to a crush sleeve, pinion seal, shim kit, and pinion bearings. A "rebuild kit" contains all of that, plus new ring gear bolts and carrier bearings, and axle bearings and seals; and probably costs less than piecing together the minimum possible for success. Buy the kit.

A cover is not "necessary", especially if all you've got is the TBI 305. Not the most efficient use of money.

Likewise, not alot of sense in putting in all new gears, all new bearings, and whatever else, and leaving some garbage 2 series non-posi carrier in there. That'd be about like building yourself a brand-new house and deciding you'll just leave a porta-potty in the front yard instead of putting in a bathroom. Yeah, it'll "work"; but is that the outcome you REALLY want??

So what have you got, and EXACTLY what did you just buy?

Re: 3.73 gear installing parts questions

Refurb 3 series Eaton most likely = Gov-lock (aka Grenade-Bomb)

TOTALLY bad idea.

Those tear up easily. Power + traction = BOOM!!!!. Literally. There used to be a pic running around on this site where somebody had one explode so hard it shot the shrapnel through the cover and into the gas tank. That's why d00d can make a killing selling "refurb" ones; so many people need em. They come in S trucks mostly. Go troll the S truck forums to find out what they're worth.

This is a Gov-bomb. If whatever the d00d is selling looks like this, RUN away.

Yes 4th gen gears will fit 3rd gen rears; they're the same model. Year doesn't matter.

You gotta know whether they're for a 2 series carrier of a 3 series. The "normal" ones, which would be for 3 series of course, will be about 3/8" away from the pinion, because your carrier is a 2 series. Won't work unless you use a spacer.

Re: 3.73 gear installing parts questions

Why would you put 3.73 gears in an automatic? You would top out at around 80mph and be working just to pay for gas.

I don't mean to be rude, i'm just saying you would be out of your power band unless it's cammed like a top fuel dragster. Go for something like 3.23s or 42s IMO.

Re: 3.73 gear installing parts questions

From that eBay listing:

EATON GOV LOC
Complete with pic that matches mine. No possible misidentification.

That is PRECISELY the thing you ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WANT to put in your car.

Keep looking.
