700r4 will not shift into 3rd

under normal driving conditions it shifts fine from first to second and after that it just free spins
first is there a way of getting around rebuilding the whole trans or is there anything i can do to fix this or should i just buy the complete kit and rebuild the whole thing need ideas

same thing happened here. if you take the load off it, it will go into 3rd. it won't go into 4th at all though. i've been told its the 3-4 clutch

Re: 700r4 will not shift into 3rd

common failure of the 700r and 4l60

3/4 clutch is bad and other parts are no doubt borderline. You could go with a basic rebuild kit but at least replace your sprag too.

you might be able to get a decent bench rebuild for $700 but you bring the tranny to them. Replace the tc while you're at it and add in 12 quarts of fluid to the budget

Re: 700r4 will not shift into 3rd

thanks for the confirmation. I'm grabing a b&m shift and rebuild kit for 230. do you need to replace the tc when rebuilding the trans? also, does the sprag need to be replaced , and what is a sprag?(new to auto trans)

Thanks

Re: 700r4 will not shift into 3rd

I know that you are on a budget but when you get the B&M kit you may not be happy with what you get. I have had a couple of students order them then when they opened the box found out it was the least amount possible to get the trans to work for a while.
You should always replace the sprag. If it wears enough it will lock and not spin then you get to build the trans again. I would spend a few more dollars if you can and get a complete kit. Look at Probuilts Automatics kits they are the most complete kits out there for years of fun use. His prices are great with what comes in the kit. You can also have one built as well with no core charge and shipping is min.

Re: 700r4 will not shift into 3rd

Well the other parts should not be that bad as I rebuilt a little over a year ago with a shift kit and upgraded sprag corvette servos and all that so I was wondering if I could just replace the third a fourth clutch and be able to get away with it or not make it an easier rebuild this time or should I just get the entire kit and go from there?

It just depends on your budget. Once you get inside the tranny you will most likely find more things worn and end up doing a complete rebuild anyway. Another thing to consider is will it be reliable with a patch job. If you can swing it I would do a complete and be done with it. How many miles is on the unit al so plays a roll in the decision. If it is low miles then you can just repair the 3-4 and do some upgrades and be done.

Re: 700r4 will not shift into 3rd

It has low miles on it I hardly ever drove it since the rebuild I would say 7000 miles on it so I think I will try just the 3 and 4 clutch and go from there cause 1st and 2nd are still strong I will just get and upgraded kit that takes care of the usually problems on the 700r4 and if that doesn't work I will save up and ditch the auto for the t56 and be done with it
