Silver *****?
A bit new to threads. Also learning more about automotive so expect little knowledge from this guy.So you're probably gonna have to spoon feed the details.
Anyway,
Car: 1987 Camaro LT 2.8ltr 5Speed Manual.
I need help figuring out what these silver ***** are, I researched them on the net and looked them up on here too. Ball bearings...? I took my transmission out to install a new TOB. While taking the transmission out there was a major spill and a 5 ***** came out of the transmission. I never really noticed them until I got the TOB installed.. I have no idea what to do on this or where these ***** go!
I have the Haynes Manual but it had nothing about it.
Thanks!

Re: Silver *****?
They're normally referred to as check *****. They go in specific passages of the valve body at least on automatics I assume that's what we're talking about.

He has a manual, not an automatic.
No idea where they fell out of the transmission?

Re: Silver *****?
Well since you found them outside the case it should be pretty obvious where they came from when you take the transmission back down. I don't know the T5 well enough to know offhand which bearings would use ***** instead of needles, but check the front input shaft and countershaft.

Re: Silver *****?
Thanks! Much appreciated! :] I'll check back in when I get it finished. Er also, another quick question. Which Fluid for the Transmission? I was discussing what fluid i should be using with an employee at a parts store.(Yes I know I should've asked an Mechanic or referred to the book). He told me DOT 3 would be usable, I'm a bit sketchy on things so I'd like to know what is preferred. Thanks once again! :]

Re: Silver *****?
ATF for the transmission. DOT 3 is brake fluid for the clutch hydraulics.

Re: Silver *****?
If ypu didn't take the trans apart (which you shouldn't have, there's absolutely no reason whatsoever to do so) then they're not from inside it.
Earlier you said "install a new TOB". Tell us more about this. I suspect there might be a clue in there somewhere.

Re: Silver *****?
If the inner and outer races of the TOB separated, the ball bearings are probably from within it. I separated the halves of a Timken f-body app. one & it was ball bearings.
The 5spd has a single ball bearing under the shift lever / guide block which doesn't easily come out.

Old Bearing in pieces Vs. New Bearing.

would make sense of what makes the bearing turn.

Re: Silver *****?
have u tried putting your transmission into different gears quickly? on some manual transmissions there are little ***** that go on the shift rail ( towards the outer part of the case) that prevent you from putting your transmission into 2 gears at once if its under high stress
