Converted Auto to T5 need speedo
I converted my 87 TPI 305 TA to t5 manual, I also installed a Borg Warner 9 bolt 3.45 (with disc brakes) and have the instrument panel. All of these parts are from the same donor car (same year, 305 TPI Firebird). I want to make my speedometer work. What should i do? :-S
Need help.
Thanks in advance!

You need a "bullet", a 7 tooth drive gear (might already be what you have, which would save A BUNCH of work) and a 20- or 21-tooth driven gear depending on your tires. Don't get too hung up on the difference; seems like the 3.4x gears need to be in between 2 sizes, so neither one is going to be "perfect", regardless of what people say the factory used. They're super easy to calculate. Search for the word "smuc" on this forum (Trans & DT), you'll have to do the "advanced" version and set it to "any date", it details exactly how to figure it out.

Re: Converted Auto to T5 need speedo
First off, did you get the T5 without the VSS & speedo gears? You left us in the dark as to just what you didn't bother to get from the donor or was missing from your car in the first place. Did you decide to upgrade an 85mph speedo to a 120 or 140 unit? That gauge panel should just bolt in and work.
Secondly,
You need a VSS since 86-up `birds had electric VSS & speedo instead of cable drive speedos.
But why are you missing parts when the donor and recipient vehicles are the same year & model?

Re: Converted Auto to T5 need speedo
Thanks for the replies.
I'll try to explain. My car had a 140mph speedo but 6000rpm tach. I took everything from the donor car and the speedo from that is 140mph but has 8000rpm (I will need that later after some modifications and I hate aftermarket gauges)
The T5 that I took had everything on it. There is a drive gear inside of the transmission (it's stock...I don't know whether it is 7 or 8 tooth) and the sensor that is being rotated by that gear is on it as well (VSS?) but as my car was an Auto it doesn't have the pig tail that the sensor needs. Hope I made it more clear.
I'm in desperate need of help here!

After you clicked on the link and read about the "smuc", what questions are left?

Re: Converted Auto to T5 need speedo
I'm sorry if I'm still asking silly questions..but a) English is not my native language b) I'm new to these cars and can't even say that am knowledgeable in these things at all.
So I have a T5 trans with a VSS "plugged" in the transmission and have an instrument panel from the the same car the trans came from. I'm missing the link between the VSS and the panel. Which parts do I have to buy to plug into the VSS and the instrument panel (if it even has to be done like that)

Re: Converted Auto to T5 need speedo
Go to that same link, EVERY PIECE you need is there; scroll up about 3 pages; look at the pigtail with yellow and purple wires.
The car probably already has that. As far as I know there's no difference in any of the wiring or anything else, between auto and manual trans.
