Higher stall or not
89 Iroc 5.7 sat for over ten years got it running and now lost 3rd 4th clutch pack.I found a rebuilt 700r4 with stage 2 shift kit but doesn't come with lock up converter. Now I need to decide whether to reuse old one buy stock reman,s-10 swap or purchase aftermarket higher stall.
I plan on changing cam and heads later just wondered how drivable higher stall would be with basically stock setup.
Any ideas are appreciated
thanks

Re: Higher stall or not
Ok rebuilder has 1800 stall for 135.00
2200 stall for 165.00
I think stock stall is around 1500 am I correct?

Re: Higher stall or not
Go with the higher stall, especially if you're gonna do any performance mods. The car will be fine on the street with the 2200 in stock trim. Gas mileage will suffer a bit.....but not much.

Re: Higher stall or not
Ended up finding a 700r4 freshly rebuilt with a 2800 stall conveverter and manual valve body.1550 invested and i paid less than half.
2800 stall is a bit much for stock but is drivable.( installing cam/heads as money allows)
installed tranny tuesday and new B&M megashifter this evening.
Its a blast to drive!!!
Thanks to edveryone on here for info

Good to hear it worked out.....it's nice to have your engine rev a little before you get rolling. Our cars feel so much better with a stall.

Re: Higher stall or not
Trying to figure out lockup on this stall converter.
Apparently it is a tci manual valve body with reverse pattern.
seems like valve body only sends pressure to converter in 4th.
reason i'm wondering is because of high stall i have no engine
braking.I was thinking of using lockup with switch to get braking back for
normal driving.
Is my thinking correct

Re: Higher stall or not
Noise in converter!!!
The converter was a little noisy when first installed-mainly as it approached stall speed but now it is getting worse.also getting small flare into 3rd sounds like my converter and possibly 3-4 clutch pack bad already.
I beleive this is a tci 2800 stall converter is some noise normal or not?
Thanks
