A good speedo cable?

I'm not having much luck with speedo cables. My stock one broke in the middle so I bought the $12 one from autozone. I followed all the instrutions, actually made wider turns than the stock since it was longer, greesed as instructed with the greese it came with. It was great for like 2 days not its load and the speedo jumps all over. I took it out, wiped it down and regreesed it and it worked ok for an hour and now is making noise again.

Has anyone tried the napa ones? I kind of had mixed reviews on them. Some say better, others say not so good. Any other brands that might be good? Thanks!

Re: A good speedo cable?

Does the speedo spin freely and increase the odometer numbers normally?
I'd make sure the speedo isn't part of the problem.

Only problem I've had was using a 1pc GM cable on a car that came with 2pc & 3.73 rear.

Re: A good speedo cable?

If your car has the cruise module that the cables go through, it's probably the problem. They go bad alot and get ALOT of friction, which makes the pointer jump and tears up the lower cable.

Re: A good speedo cable?

It was working fine before the old cable broke in the center. Pretty quiet and not a lot of jumping around. The speedo is really smooth right after I greese it but then it gets worse again making me think that its just a cheap cable.

Where is the cruise control module? Is it part of the gear box on the transmission?

I might try one from the GM direct.

Just reading about it, are you taking about the 2 piece cables with the cruise control module in the middle? If so thats not mine. I just have the 1 piece cable, straight from the tranny to the speedo

It was some green grease that came with it. I use to lube my stock one with the napa stuff and I think I'll go back and get more of that. I have tried everything else with this cable.. its fastened down good, no kinks, wide turns, drive gears are fine. I was reading so people saying that the really cheap cables have a little bit of flex to them, as in you can turn one end and it takes the other end awhile to start moving, and it makes like a spring effect until you get up to like 45 and the tension gets high enough it disappears, it seems like that is exactly what its doing. I order the GM direct part for the heck of it, only 45 bucks.. we'll see how it goes.
