Slave Cylinder and Murphy's Law

This is more of a whine than a question, but I was just so G-D excited to FINALLY get to not only drive my car, but drive it with longtubes AND a 5 speed since I just converted it over from the 700r4.

Finished it all up last night, started her with just the headers and S-extensions, went to shift into gear, and nothing. I'd spaced bleeding the hydraulics. Wife and daughter got home, so I took her off the jack stands until today.

I had a very light home office day, so I thought I'd gravity bleed the hydraulics since the wifey was at work, and I didn't have any helpers I could call. Got in to check the pedal pressure, got almost to the floor, and POP! Pedal went limp. Checked the actuator rod on the pedal- still connected. No leaks at the master. Didn't see any at the slave until I applied a slight amount of pressure to the slave rod boot- all of a sudden I was showered in brake fluid. Blew the slave completely out of it's cylinder.

So now, I have to wait until maybe Sunday before I'll have time to play with it again. I'm going to order the aluminum bodied replacement- this plastic unit is kind of cheesey, and I'm nervous with it being that close to the headers even with the heat shield and header wrap. Either way, it will probably be a week plus before I even get to drive it. Tags are due too, and I have a new set of tires waiting to be mounted. Damn you Murphy.

Did the same thing, cause the throw-out bearing wasn't in right and over extended the slave cylinder.

Mine was a dumb dumb move when I removed the retainer ring from the slave thinking it was supposed to be removed. Once I got all the air out it blew the guts out. Live and learn I guess

Re: Slave Cylinder and Murphy's Law

Got the new aluminum unit, installed and bled it, and that F'n Murphy won't take a day off!!!

Stripped out the allen port in the bleeder screw on the very last tightening sequence..fortunately, I have the old bleeder screw from the old slave cylinder. At least I finally got to drive the car through the neighborhood!!!

In case anyone wants to see the difference between the aluminum Advance Auto stocks and the el cheapo plastic one, it's below. The plastic one didn't originally come with the brake looking bleeder- that was a test fit of an extra speed bleeder from the front brakes. No, it won't fit.
