Hey guys I have a '91 Trans Am with the 1le package I had the rear more or less go out on me the other day. Its making a high pitched whining sound really bad even after I pulled the diff cover, cleaned everything out, and refilled it with fluid. I've decided that I'm just gonna replace everything in it. I know I want to put 3.73 gears in it when I rebuild it as well. But I need to know what I'm looking for with the limited slip/posi set up.

I pulled the RPO codes that I have for the car and with the rear end it says I have.

G80-axle, rear, positraction, limited slip positraction l/slip r/axle
G92- axle, rear, performance ratio (merchandising option) performance r/axle ratio
GU6- axle, rear, 3.42 ratio 3.42r

Sorry if it doesn't make sense but that's the way its printed on the sheet. Anyways is there something in particular I should be looking for when trying to locate a new diff? And are there are there any particular models that I should keep an eye out for that would have these rear end parts? I'm probably going to have to get the parts used cause I don't have a lot of money at the moment. Honestly I'm not to familiar with rear end parts and this is the first time I'd be taking one apart so any help in locating or giving me knowledge as to what I need is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

Also I know a 4th gen limited slip will fit, but would there be any benifits if I were to swap on of these set ups into my car? Or I know of a Iroc thats in a jy and been there for while that I think still has a rear in it would I be better off going that route?

You might check the FAQ below for info that may (or may not) answer a few of your questions--or at least provide food for thought:

Hey James yeah I was checking that out earlier and I saw where you mentioned the G80 rear that I apparently have. What exactly is it that made it a more expensive option? How hard are they to find and how can I tell if a car in the jy has one? Guitarguy I think thats probably the route I'm gonna have to go I just have to find a truck to go down there with and pick it up.

Thanks for the in put guys
