WC T-5 No Fifth Gear.

Well I have never had fifth gear with this WC T-5 transmission since I bought it and decided it was time to fix it. When ever you try to go into fifth it is like being in neutral. After researching I decided I should attempt to seperate the tailshaft and see if it was a snap ring. Well the snap ring appears to be in place and the pin in the fork to 5th gear does to.
Do you think something internally could have worn or broke that it needs a rebuild or what. Please let me know so I can this puppy running again

It has to be something inside the main case. At this point with the tail shaft seperated you only have a few bolts on the top cover to remove , lift it off and see if anything in the linkage is out of place.

Re: WC T-5 No Fifth Gear.

Alright the problem was actually a clip. Now that I am putting it back together I have another problem. Getting that darn spring and ball back in. Any tips for doing so. I tried lining the shifter block up with the shaft in neutral then seating the tail with the case thus forcing the shaft up. Well I thought I had it but the shaft must have went forward into a gear while the ball and spring were in neutral position causing it to lock up. I know people have done this before but I am at a loss of patience with getting that darn ball and spring to fit right.

Re: WC T-5 No Fifth Gear.

Hmm. It's been a while since I did a T5.
Usually, it's a matter of holding the lever in place w/ a thumb while setting the case in place.
For the T56 shift guide lever, I zip-tie the ball against the spring. It'll slide a bit, letting the ball out. But if you hold it in place, it works. As long as there's clearance between the lever & guide plate, it should work on the T5.

Hey 240z, take bearing grease and put it all over the spring and ball.then make sure you're in nuetral again, RTV the flange of the case, now holding the shifter block down with your thumb and pushing the tailshaft onto the case at the same time should get it back together. sometimes the reverse/5th gear shift rail gets bound up on the tailshaft during installation, when this happens I use a 5lb. dead blow hammer, hitting the case to jolt the shift rail into place in the tailshaft case. and don't try to put it together when you're already tired and pissed!

Re: WC T-5 No Fifth Gear.

If I recall correctly , the way I did it was with the shifter shaft end block removed from the shaft (the block with the spring & ball in it) I sealed and bolted up the tail shaft. Then with the shifter rod slid all the way forward, (4th gear) the block and spring can be slid on the back of the shaft and the roll pin driven in. It was over a year ago when I did mine to change the speedometer drive gear but I'm pretty sure this is how I did it.

Re: WC T-5 No Fifth Gear.

alright so if I try sliding down in 4th I am going to make sure that ball is in the 4th slot? Same would go for neutral right?
I believe this is what locked me out when I took a hammer to slide the block down the shaft must have engaged it in a gear while the ball was still in the neutral saddle looking groove.
