3.08 gears in my rear end
I decided to go with the 350 that was in the car when I bought it, and install a new cam and rework the heads. to go with the new cam set up I want. I opened the rear end to see what gears where in it and 3.08 was what I got. Are these good or should I change them. The will be raced occasionally but mostly be on the highway running up and down playing with the car. I am not a gear head but I can turn wrenches with a little instruction>

not a performance minded gear ratio, so if you want a little more, you can go to a 3:42, which is a factory ratio. I do believe its a different carrier though, so you will need to get a different carrier or use the special thicker gears to fit what you have.
installing gears requires special setup or the gears will be noise and the life will be dramatically shortened. Its something to have done by a pro unless you know what you are doing.

The 3.08 if it should be a 9 bolt rear, which is a 3 series carrier. You can build a 3.45 or a 3.70. The 3.45 will get a little better mileage if that's a concern. You will also have to figure out and change speedometer gears in the tranny.

There's much in the link below that you may find interesting:

BTW, 3.08 is series II.
